Derek started assistant teaching at 15 for Northwest Children's Theatre in Portland, OR where he ended up filling in as Christopher Robin among Preschoolers in Winnie the Pooh. His passion for theatre education took off from there. In Portland he taught for the Young Players, and the Portland Actor's Conservatory's summer youth program.
In Chicago, Derek was a full time substitute and assistant Teacher in English and Drama Conservatory at ChiArts, Chicago's first public performing arts high school. Derek also taught and directed for the National High School Institute Theatre "Cherubs" program at Northwestern University for the last seven years where he taught students who have performed on Broadway, and Oscar Award winning films. Additionally, Derek assistant taught for Northlight Theatre's Outreach program.
In New York, Derek is now the Education Manager for Acting Out in Brooklyn teaching ages 10 - 18. He's had the honor of coaching students who can be seen on Broadway in Caroline, or Change and Disney's The Lion King.
Coaching is one of Derek's passions. As a monologue coach, he has a wealth of knowledge of plays and material that will play to your strong suit, He has a wealth of knowledge preparing aspiring actors for both middle school and high school auditions throughout New York and has young actors get into LaGuardia, PPAS, and Mark Twain. .
As a coach, Derek begins with table-work and text analysis before getting on your feet to dive into the work. He utilizes personalization and emotional recall as a way for actor's to connect to the text.
